Winning trials is table stakes. Every candidate on a recruiter’s desk has a strong record, a sharp resume, and a few war stories about the case that almost got away. That is not what separates the lawyers who land at their dream firm from the ones who get passed over.
What separates them is Grit.
If you have that winning way, you already know it. You have Grit. But what does that actually mean, and how do you prove it in an interview where everyone across the table has heard the “I won a big case” story a hundred times before?
What Grit Actually Means
Grit is integrity. Grit is passion. Grit is staying past the end of the workday because you refuse to walk into court tomorrow without knowing every line of your opening.
It goes beyond your knowledge of the law and your performance in it. Grit is the reliability and the mindset of a lawyer, the thing that shows up when no one is grading you and nothing about the moment is glamorous. That mindset breaks down into a few defining characteristics, and mastering how you talk about them is where interviews are won or lost. Let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.
InteGRITy
Integrity starts with honesty, and not the easy kind. It means being honest with yourself about your own limits and mistakes, and being honest with the people you work with and for, even when the truth is inconvenient. Sometimes integrity means doing the work for little recognition and no immediate reward, and being able to live with that because you know you did the right thing and gave it everything you had.
Loyalty is the other half of integrity, and it shows up most clearly in how you handle confidentiality. That discretion has to extend to clients and to other firms, including firms you no longer work for and firms you compete against. A lawyer with real integrity does not badmouth a former employer or a rival in an interview, no matter how bad that experience actually was. Recruiters notice restraint. They also notice when it is missing.
Passion
A gritty lawyer shows passion, and not only for what they already know. Passion for what you do not yet know, for what you are still hoping to learn, matters just as much. That hunger should come through clearly in your interviews. It signals to a potential employer that you have the Grit and the humility to keep growing, both as a lawyer and as a person, rather than coasting on what got you this far.
Your passion is your work. It is the thing you put your full effort into at every single point, not just the moments someone is watching.
Perseverance
The practice of law is full of ups and downs, and a gritty lawyer is defined by how they handle the downs. Mistakes happen. Cases fall apart. The lawyers who last are the ones who take those setbacks in stride, learn from them, and let them point directly at where they need to improve. A lawyer with real Grit never stops looking for room to grow, and never pretends the failures did not happen.
When you sit down for an interview, talk about your Grit directly. Point to the specific moment a case turned around because of something you did, a decision you made, or a mistake you owned and corrected. Showing your inteGRITy in the way you tell that story is what makes you memorable in an employer’s eyes.
The Ability to Lead
Leadership is not only the ability to assemble people and drive results. It is its own form of Grit. That Grit is what makes someone a natural leader rather than just someone with a title.
Leadership means being able to take charge and take responsibility, including in the moments that carry real risk. Can you draw on your Grit to voice a flaw in a partner’s case, knowing that speaking up could be politically uncomfortable? That willingness, to protect the work and the client even when it is not the easy or popular move, is exactly the kind of Grit that top law recruiters are looking for.
