Moneyball  — Legal Recruiters Seal the Deal

Get ready, we are in one of the tightest employment markets in decades. The legal space is hot, in fact there’s never been a better time to make a move.

There’s a lot of movement out there and a lot of it stems from a strong desire to improve the work / life balance of the legal profession. Lawyers are pushing back requesting flexible hours with limited in-office hours to work remotely from home.

“Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if you don’t have the first, the other two will kill you.” — Warren Buffet.

Batter up, let’s play ball.

In the Major Leagues ‘small ball’ strategically puts runners on base, then moving players into scoring position. It’s not flashy—but it does get results.

It’s a deliberate, sound strategy of getting base hits to get your candidate in front of interested parties.

Hardball tactics kill deals.

One of the most common tactics is the ultimatum to get the upper hand during the negotiations. This swing-for-the-fences style of play is risky, requiring you to make concessions from the onset.

Don’t let these hardball tactics kill the deal. Take a moment to reframe the  negotiation so that it is no longer an ultimatum.

Work with your recruiter to create and build trust during the negotiations and  avoid hardball tactics. Recruiters have developed relationships with firms and speak their language.

The legal field is a small pool of attorneys. Maintaining the confidentiality of your job search can not be overstated. Work with a legal recruiter who will advise and guide your through this very difficult process.

Fraud is pervasive in the legal space, all details about your background and experience are fact-checked. Failure to disclose anything is certain to be a deal breaker down the road. Be candid and forthcoming with your advisor, this will go a long way to present your credentials in the best light.

The jobs market is very competitive, opportunities are time sensitive. Be prepared to be decisive, move quickly once at the negotiating table. Get the deal done.
